Nachbilder und Augenlidenzucken
Galerie Bob Gysin proudly present Nachbilder & Augenliderzucken (Afterimages & eyelid-twitchings) is Christoph Schreiber‘s sixth solo exhibition with the gallery.
If Schreiber‘s earlier pieces verged on the surrealist, reworked photographs presented here are rather more enigmatic. We can discern three levels: a sphere of the mundane and the two spheres of temporal and digital space. Not only do they address and unify contrasts such as distance and proximity, timelessness and instantaneity, they also exhibit a strong painterly element. The suggestive power exerted by these components draws the viewer into deep contemplation. However, the artist‘s intention is neither to educate nor to inform, but to facilitate a genuine aesthetic experience.
It is not easy to pin Schreiber‘s works down in terms of art history. His earlier surrealistic leanings have been supplanted by more abstract, more associative compositions. Pure images, the pieces presented here all share one theme, that of the image as a function in and of itself.
The artist considers himself a visual researcher who creates both highly artificial and perfectly natural works. And while he values the fact that they are firmly rooted in the present, he also endeavours to render invisible, ineffable aspects tangible in a juxtaposition of alien and familiar elements. It is these contrasts that provide the necessary friction in life, which Schreiber wishes to explore to the greatest possible depth.
The artist‘s video, Spirito, can be viewed in the lobby area. In a different medium, its response resembles that of the more static yet animated photos in the gallery. Finally, Schreiber‘s waney-edged timber stools invite visitors to stay for a few contemplative moments.
